General Information

The town Pedrógão Grande is situated in the green heart of central Portugal, actually the geographical centre of the country, surrounded from hills, woods, rivers and lakes.The region consists of sleepy villages and numerous single quintas. The local people cultivate gardens with vegetables, fruits, olives and wines. Some of them hold sheep and goats. There are no fabrics and industries and on the road you still feel free. It does not mean that there is a loss of civilisation: there are supermarket-chains as Lidl or Intermarché, car-repairs, numerous builder's yards and hardware stores, health centers, dentists and pharmacies. Every week on monday is market in town, fresh fish 3 days a week. The bakerman comes daily to your door and delivers you fresh bread, delicious sweet portuguese bakery, milk and butter.
The regional people are of friendly and helpful mentality, foreigners are welcome as neighbours.

The Rio Zêzere, drifting through the Lagoa de Cabril , the longest waterreservoir bedded in this idyllic landscape, 60 km large and 120 m deep, the biggest on the Iberic peninsula, brings clearest cristal water from around the mountains, rich quantity of various sorts of fish as carps or trouts. Great oportunities for fishing ! .. and   swimming, sailing, kajaking or trekking in the valleys . Numerous natural river-swimming aereas attract for leisure summer afternoons with the family or alone.

Location and Clima

To Lisbon it is a drive of 232 kms over the IC8 and the highway, to Porto about 190 kms. The nearest biggest city is Coimbra, 70 km away. The Atlantic is 90 km less than one hour by car over the highway. The region is influenced from continental clima and that causes long warm summers, from may to end of september. Mild winters, moody between dry and friendly and rainy and wet.

Medical Care

There are several hospitals in the area with the main hospital for specialist treatments located in the City of Coimbra 70 kms away. A pharmacy can always be found nearby and the hospitals, where the nursing staff will be found to be dedicated and sympathetic, are modernising at an amazing pace. The most modern equipment can be found everywhere and methods of treatment and investigative procedures are now probably on a par with any other   European country - this change has been observed in a period of only 8 years. The local Provincial hospitals and private clinics offer specialist consultations and treatments, served usually by specialists coming in from the cities on regular days. Operations are also done but the more serious cases will be sent to the Coimbra University Hospital which is considered to be amongst the top in the world, especially for orthopaedics.

Culture and Entertainment

Portuguese people love the tradiional village "festas", festivities on any Saint's birthday.They start early summer and last until end of autumn.  There is music and dancing nearly around the clock, folkloristic ensembles and rockacts are presented hand in hand at the open-air space near the local church. Open-air grills, open-air wine-adegas ... one of the most famous festas is St.James' in june. Rich cultural life as theatres, museums or concerts can be found in the region's bigger cities
like Coimbra, Leiria, Pombal or Tomar.
